The
1990 problem led to the mushrooming of many dissident organizations
in exile to address the problems of the innocent people and their eventual
repatriation to Bhutan in dignity and honour. However, they could not
provide a strong opposition and match the might of the long established
autocratic regime so a need was felt for an alternative force to effectively
counter and expose the ruling establishment of its misdeeds. Hence, the
DNC was born out of the exigencies of time.
Deeply moved on being a witness to the misery of his compatriots where tens
of thousands of them were being made destitutes and pained at the deplorable
condition of those inside the country, particularly in the east. Mr.
Rongthong Kunley Dorji, a prominent business man, thought it unfair to
remain an idle spectator on the entire happenings. Therefore, he decided to
form a political party i.e. Druk National Congress (DNC) with membership
from all parts of the country.
